“These results reinforce the market’s shift toward experiences Audi offers in terms of performance and technology, luxurious features and efficiency,” said Audi of America Inc. Executive Vice President Johan de Nysschen.” We believe the long-term value of owning Audi models will be a difference maker as these economic times lead consumers to rethink their luxury-vehicle options.”
Strategic Vision noted that consumers are giving greater scrutiny to their vehicles, which it said opens up opportunities. “When economic conditions become more favorable, the manufacturers who have focused their efforts in enhancing product quality and communicating messages of trustworthy products and overall value will be in a position to regain, and even take over new, market share.”
In the Total Value Index’s luxury SUV segment, the Audi Q7 outpaced recent winners in the category — the Mercedes-Benz GL and ML models, the Lexus GX 470 and the BMW X5 — on the basis of standard equipment, technical innovations and affordability in its class.

“The redesigned 2009 Audi A4 luxury sport sedan gained further validation of its segment-leading qualities by earning the U.S. government’s highest crashworthiness and rollover safety rating.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the A4 achieved the coveted 5-Star designation based on its performance in the New Car Assessment Program, or NCAP. U.S. law requires all passenger cars to pass a 30 mph frontal crash test and a 33.5 mph side crash test. But the NCAP tests involve crashes that are conducted at 5 mph above the required test speeds providing additional consumer safety information. NHTSA then gives ratings of one star for the worst performers to five stars for the best models, such as the Audi A4.
The 2009 Audi A4 officially went on sale to American luxury car buyers in late September. The A4 offers advanced safety features and accident-prevention technologies in addition to a significantly stiffer and smoother body shell to protect motorists and passengers. Among the key safety features:
- Front, side and side-curtain airbags are standard equipment in every A4.
- The available dynamic steering system helps stabilize the vehicle several times a second when it detects the car is exceeding its capabilities.
- Available Adaptive cruise control detects a vehicle ahead of the A4 and gently reduces the car’s speed as the distance narrows. Once the road clears, the system slowly accelerates back to the set cruise control speed.
The A4 also offers superior handling due to a front track that is 2.5 inches wider than the closest competing BMW model and nearly an inch wider than the closest Lexus. It also offers more front row shoulder and head room than competing luxury models and a smoother ride helped by the longest wheelbase in its class. The A4 also features a new 2.0-liter TFSI engine that generates 211 hp and 258-lbs-ft. of torque while getting 15 percent better fuel economy than the turbocharged engine it replaces. The improved 3.2-liter engine produces 265 hp and 243 lbs-ft of torque with a 10 percent gain in fuel economy. The new engines are paired with an all-new 6-speed transmission to provide precise shifting and fuel efficiency.”

Audi fans in Denver, Colorado, recognize the Audi A8 as the full-size luxury executive car built by German automaker Audi. First brought to the market in 1994, most versions of the Audi A8 feature quattro all-wheel-drive as standard equipment, and come with Multitronic or Tiptronic automatic transmission. The 2008 Audi A8 is largely a carryover version styled to blend into the Audi lineup. Inside, it’s impeccably detailed, and the Audi A8’s cabin is as “handsome and spacious” as ever, Edmunds believes. Automobile.com calls it “conservative as the lobby of a Ritz-Carlton hotel,” with careful lines, lots of wood, and leather.
There are two versions of the A8, Audi’s large luxury sedan—a standard car and the A8 L, which has a 121-inch wheelbase, slightly more than 5 inches bigger than that of the base model, according to Cars.com. Both are penned not to offend. Automobile.com phrased it the best: “Aesthetically, Audi took the safe road when it penned the second-edition A8.” Audi, the magazine says in its online site, has designed a “well-proportioned” car that’s “subdued,” and praises its “long, arc-shaped roofline and the familial front end.”
As Car and Driver points out, changes for the 2008 Audi A8 are minimal; other than LED turn signals and taillights, new wheels, and interior/exterior finish options, there’s very little to distinguish the 2008 Audi A8 from its 2007 predecessor on the outside. TheCarConnection.com’s editors think the A8 Audi is one of the most refined-looking vehicles on the road. The exterior shape is enduring; inside the A8, Audi’s instrument panel looks remarkably clean and simplified compared to the excess of lines and gadgets in the latest Benz S-Class or BMW 7-Series.

Some Colorado Audi enthusiasts may be aware that the 2008 Audi A5 is a new mid-size sporty coupe that shares mechanical underpinnings with the upcoming 2009 Audi A4 sedan. The Audi A5 was unveiled simultaneously at the Geneva Motor Show and Melbourne International Motor Show on March 6, 2007.
To look at the 2008 Audi A5, it’s difficult to believe that it’s considered entry level. It is what chief Audi stylist Walter de Silva deems “the most beautiful car I have ever designed,” and it had a Jalopnik reviewer drooling when he caught a glimpse of it on a California highway, calling it “simply smashing.”
Edmunds calls it “curvaceous yet muscular,” while Cars.com says it’s “instantly recognizable as an Audi.” Car and Driver feels the 2008 Audi A5 has something for everyone: “Mature proportions that will please the dandy, sate the sports-car enthusiast, and offend no one.” Kelley Blue Book concurs that the A5 is “elegant” inside and out. ForbesAutos declares the A5’s “wide shoulder lines, high beltline and massive trapezoidal front grille” are a success, and that its back end kicks up subtly to “preserve a clean aesthetic.” The overall look “strikes a balance between timeless elegance and dramatic flair.”
Inside, the 2008 Audi A5 feels lavish and luxurious, with high-grade materials and plenty of attention to small design details. The display screen for Audi’s Multi-Media Interface (MMI) dominates the top of the instrument panel. The interior is “more sporty than luxurious,” according to ConsumerGuide, but retains “a classy driving environment–functional and comfortable, cool but not overstyled,” Automobile observes.

In it consumers rate vehicles in eight different categories: performance, comfort, fuel economy, fun to drive, interior design, exterior design, build quality and reliability. The 2008 Audi TT took awards in the ‘coupe $25K-35K’ and ‘convertible over $35K’ categories. The second-generation Audi TT is now available to consumers in the United States as the 2008 model.
