The Porsche brand in Colorado is at home in every season of the year. While a popular automobile model year-round, the Porsche Cayenne SUV may tend to receive even more attention in Colorado when the cooler months roll around. We thought it would be of interest to Porsche fans in Colorado to read more of what Porsche itself has to say about the sporty Porsche Cayenne.
Wheels and TPM
Porsche models have always been known for their distinctive wheel designs. The Cayenne is no exception. The Cayenne model comes standard with the 17-inch Cayenne wheel. The Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo are each offered with the 18-inch Cayenne S II and the 18-inch Cayenne Turbo II.
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM)
Standard on the Cayenne GTS and Cayenne Turbo, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is an electronic control system that adjusts the suspension system to changing driving styles and road conditions. PASM is also available as an option on the Cayenne and Cayenne S and is combined with air suspension.
The air suspension system features a self-leveling ride-height control and PASM. The six-level system is standard on the Cayenne Turbo and optional on the Cayenne and Cayenne S.
Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC)
Two major objectives of Porsche chassis design are optimal roadholding and precision handling. Both of these can be further enhanced with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC). This optional aid is available for all new Cayenne models in conjunction with the optional air suspension featuring PASM.
Steering
To enhance the Cayenne’s innate agility, both on- and off-road, Porsche engineers combined a variable steering ratio with precise valve settings on the power-steering system. Lock-to-lock travel is a modest 2.65 turns, while the turning circle is just 38.39 feet.
The steering wheel can be adjusted by 1.97 inches for reach and 1.57 inches for height. Both adjustment options are manual on the Cayenne and Cayenne S, and power assisted on the Cayenne Turbo. Power adjustment is also available as an option on the Cayenne and Cayenne S in conjunction with the optional Comfort or Sports Seat Packages.

The Porsche Cayenne is a five-seat mid-size sport utility vehicle well-suited for Colorado driving. Manufactured by Porsche since 2002, North American sales began in 2003.
The exterior changes on the 2008 Porsche Cayenne include headlights that “are flatter, and the leading edge in front of the hood is more defined than before,” according to Cars.com. The Detroit News says “the subtle changes create a more sophisticated look,” thanks to the fact that “the turn signal indicators have been removed from the headlight assembly and lowered onto the grille.” Kelley Blue Book reviewers note that the redesign serves a “functional sense” as well as a styling one, since the new features bring “an aerodynamic benefit” as “the coefficient of drag has been lowered substantially offering potential fuel economy benefits.”
ForbesAutos is pleased to find that “Porsche stayed away from any form of multifunction knob-controlled system as seen on virtually every new luxury vehicle from foreign manufacturers,” such as BMW’s iDrive. Also winning praise are the “large, simple toggles for climate, suspension, and transfer-case settings,” which ConsumerGuide appreciates.
The 2008 Porsche Cayenne lineup offers four engines: one V-6 and three V-8s. Edmunds notes that the base Porsche 2008 Cayenne features “a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 290 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque,” while “the Cayenne S packs a 4.8-liter V8 with 385 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque,” and the Cayenne GTS has the same engine, but it “produces 405 hp.” Edmunds also writes that the Porsche Cayenne Turbo “has a twin-turbocharged version of the V8 that makes a mighty 500 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.”
Car and Driver is pleasantly surprised to find that, on the 2008 Porsche Cayenne Turbo, “the 0-to-60-mph run takes 4.8 seconds.” Even on the base Cayenne, The Detroit News determines that it “can hit 60 mph in 7.5 seconds starting from a stop,” which is impressive for a vehicle that weighs more than 5,000 pounds.

Colorado Porsche enthusiasts are likely to already know much about the Porsche Cayman. First launched in the 2006 model year, the Porsche Cayman is a mid-engined, rear wheel drive 2-seat sports car. The Cayman is a coupé derived from Porsche’s second generation Boxster convertible.
In a review posted earlier this year by Auto Reviewer, “The new 2008 Porsche Cayman is a luxury vehicle combining comfort, convenience and impressive performance levels, using its 2.7-liter, 6-cylinder engine that produces 245-horse power. This model also uses a 5-speed manual transmission or the available Tiptronic S, making it possible for the driver to shift between manual and automatic transmissions.
The 2008 Cayman offers several standard safety features, including the anti-lock braking system, a seatbelt pretensioner with belt-force limitation and dual Advanced Airbags that provide optimum upper-body protection in front. There’s also airbags for side-impact protection, and showing that children are kept in mind is a LATCH-compatible child seat.
Striking to look at, this Porsche shows off exterior features like an automatically deployed rear spoiler and chrome exhaust pipe. Also, the front end with prominent air intakes and lower spoiler edge painted in titanium color. Convenience is provided with heated and electrically adjustable outside mirrors.
Taking a look inside the vehicle, the optional Park Assist system helps the driver when going in reverse. It uses four ultrasonic sensors integrated into the rear bumper that gauge distances to stationary objects, triggering a warning signal that increases in frequency as objects draw nearer.
Automatic climate control is offered for comfort, and entertainment is provided to occupants with the audio system, which an AM/FM radio with digital CD player. Other options include surround sound and a remote CD changer.
The new 2008 Porsche Cayman is a car that puts together a package of sporty design, technology and safety, and this year’s luxury car buyer will have a hard time passing by it without taking a second glance at this car.”

In Colorado the Porsche brand’s reputation is legendary. In a May 2006 survey, Porsche was awarded the title of the most prestigious automobile brand by Luxury Institute, New York. The survey was conducted among more than 500 households with a gross annual income of at least US $200,000 and a net worth of at least US $720,000. The current Porsche lineup includes sports cars from the Boxster roadster to their most famous product, the 911. The Cayman is a hard top car similar to the Boxster in a slightly higher price range. The Cayenne is Porsche’s mid-size luxury SUV. Future plans include a high performance luxury saloon/sedan, the Panamera.
Porsche was awarded the 2006 J.D. Power and Associates award for the highest-ranked nameplate in its Initial Quality Study (IQS) of automobile brands. As a company, Porsche is known for weathering changing market conditions with great financial stability, while retaining most production in Germany during an age when most other German car manufacturers have moved at least parts of their production to Eastern Europe or overseas. The headquarters and main factory are still in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, but the Cayenne (and formerly the Carrera GT) is manufactured in Leipzig, Germany, the SUV also in Bratislava, Slovakia. The company has been highly successful in recent times, and indeed claims to have the highest profit per unit sold of any car company in the world.
Porsche has for many years offered consultancy services to various other car manufacturers. Audi, Studebaker, SEAT, Daewoo, Subaru and Yugo have consulted Porsche on engineering for their cars or engines. Porsche also helped Harley-Davidson design their new engine in their newer V-Rod motorcycle.

Colorado Porsche fans may be interested to know something about the early history of Porsche. The following timeline details some of the origins of the company.
1875:
On September 3, Ferdinand Porsche is born in the Bohemian town of Maffersdorf. In 1889, after attending grammar school there and the Staatsgewerbeschule (State Vocational School) in Reichenberg, he enters his father’s business as an apprentice plumber.
1900:
The Lohner-Porsche electric car is presented at the World Fair in Paris. The wheel hub engines of the young engineer Ferdinand Porsche bring him international attention. In the same year, he develops an all-wheel-drive racecar, as well as a hybrid petrol/electric vehicle – a world first.
1906:
Ferdinand Porsche becomes Technical Director at Austro-Daimler in Wiener Neustadt. At the age of only 31, he is responsible for the model range of one of Europe’s largest automotive concerns.
1909:
Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche, later known as ‘Ferry’, is born on September 19 in Wiener Neustadt.
1910:
The Austro-Daimler touring car designed by Ferdinand Porsche scores a triple victory in the Prince Henry Trials. At the wheel of the winning car sits none other than Ferdinand Porsche himself.
1923:
As Technical Director and Board Member of the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft in Stuttgart, Ferdinand Porsche designs the legendary Mercedes Compressor Sports Car. The following year, the 2-litre racecar developed under his aegis wins the Targa Florio. The Mercedes-Benz S-Type models dominate international motorsport from 1927.
1931:
Crowning his career, Ferdinand Porsche opens an office for ‘engineering and consultation on engine and vehicle design’ in Stuttgart on April 25. Created for such renowned manufacturers as Wanderer, Zündapp and NSU are not only entire vehicles, but such trend-setting detail solutions as the Porsche torsion bar suspension.
1933:
For Auto Union, Porsche develops a Grand Prix racecar with a 16-cylinder engine in mid-ship configuration. The rear-engine vehicle concept designed for the compact car (Type 32) developed for NSU is ultimately incorporated in the Volkswagen Beetle.
1934:
The company Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche KG receives an official order for the design and construction of a German Volkswagen. Only one year later, the VW prototype is test driven. The ‘Ur Beetle’ is assembled in the garage of the Porsche villa in Stuttgart.
1935:
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche is born on December 11 in Stuttgart as the eldest son of Ferry Porsche.
1936:
Parallel to road trials of the Type 60, production facilities are erected under the direction of Ferdinand Porsche for the Volkswagen renamed the ‘KdF-Wagen’.
1939:
Under the designation Type 64, three racing coupés are developed at Porsche in Zuffenhausen. Built for long-distance endurance competition, the ‘Berlin–Rom-Wagen’ are considered the forefathers of all later Porsche sports cars.
1944:
Owing to wartime conditions, the Porsche KG engineering office moves to Gmünd in the Austrian province of Carinthia.
1946:
Under the direction of Ferdinand Porsche’s son Ferry, design of an all-wheeldrive Grand Prix racecar – the ‘Cisitalia’ (Type 360) – is begun for Italian industrialist Piero Dusio.
1948:
The 356 is the first sports car to bear the Porsche name. ‘No. 1’ is road certified in June. Only one month later, the lightweight mid-engine roadster wins its first class victory at the Innsbruck Stadtrennen.

The Porsche Boxster is legendary in Colorado. Not surprisingly some of the most revealing accounts and descriptions of the Porsche Boxster come from its creators. In this blog we’ve assembled some of what Porsche itself has to say about the Boxster. The extracted insights may well be of interest to Colorado Porsche fans.
Concept
The design concept that was shown at Detroit was a direct expression of the original mid-engine Porsche roadster, the legendary 550 Spyder. In the mid-1950s, the Porsche 550 practically rewrote the rules of high performance, becoming one of the most successful racing cars of its time.
It didn’t have the biggest engine, nor was it the most costly sports car of its era. What it had was innovation, pure and simple. The idea of locating a compact, freerevving engine midship gave the Porsche a nimbleness no sports car had ever possessed. The Spyder didn’t have to outmuscle its competitors. It could outbrake, outmaneuver and outsmart them.
The Boxster shares this boldly intelligent approach to sports car design. Within an open-top, twoseater layout sits a mid-mounted, flat-six boxer engine, its low center of gravity helping to instill driving confidence through the corners.
Philosophy
There is no shortage of intellectual exchange taking place at the Porsche design studios in Weissach, Germany. Every alternation proposed must be rationalized, held up to the ideal that form must follow function.
Since the time of its inauguration, a litany of significant enhancements has been made to the Boxster’s celebrated form—each of them at once faithful to its heritage, firmly rooted in functionality and unlike anything else on the road.
Aerodynamics
Porsche, it’s not simply a matter of styling shapes that shear the least resistant path through air. Wind is an important ally in our incessant effort to elevate performance. As well as an essential element of the Boxster’s character.
Every line, every curve and every carefully chiseled detail play a vital role in shaping, shifting and refining the flow of air. Charge into the wind, and the Boxster’s prominent front air ducts pass generous amounts of cool air to the engine’s radiators. Then, directional spoilers channel it to the next assignment: brake cooling.
Large intakes on the rear quarter panels feed even more cooling air to the flat-six engine. The air that flows over the car arcs down the sloping rear deck, applying downforce to a rear spoiler that extends at speeds above 75 mph for crisp handling and high-speed stability. Less visible, but no less important, is a smooth underbody design that keeps air gliding beneath the car, creating a “ground effects” stream that reduces lift and drag while simultaneously venting stagnant air around the gearbox.

The Porsche 911 has become a sports car icon for Colorado and Rocky Mountain region drivers. The car’s basic design is classic with its large glass area, slim roof pillars and no-nonsense interior. The Porsche 911 provides a comfortable and stress-free environment for the driver, unlike some competing sports cars. Under driving conditions the Porsche 911 is just as appealing, with a smooth power delivery, strong yet easily modulated brakes and ultra-responsive steering. Competing cars simply don’t have the Porsche 911’s solid build quality nor its compact dimension and uncluttered sight lines. The Porsche 911 trim levels include the Carrera, Carrera S, GT3 and Turbo.

The Porsche Cayenne fits the Colorado lifestyle perfectly … whether it’s recreation, the mountains, running errands around town … whatever your daily routines demand. In the Colorado region where SUVs seem to represent about every other automobile on the road, the Porsche Cayenne with its style and performance stands out among the pack.

The Porsche Cayenne is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by Porsche since 2002. North American sales began in 2003. The Cayenne was not included for the 2007 model year, but has been redesigned for 2008. The 2008 model features a 4.8L V-8 engine. The turbocharged model has extremely high performance for a sport utility vehicle. Reviews indicate that the Cayenne handles remarkably well for a heavy SUV, while having a comfortable ride, and, by some sources, better off-road ability than competing brand models.
At the IAA 2005, Porsche announced it will produce a hybrid version of the Cayenne before 2010 (Porsche Cayenne Hybrid). Two years later, at the IAA 2007, Porsche presented a demonstration car of the Cayenne Hybrid and demonstration model of the Cayenne Hybrid’s drivetrain (including all engines and batteries). The main rival for the Cayenne would be the Land Rover Range Rover Sport. Edmunds.com wrote, “The Porsche is faster in both acceleration and top speed than the equivalent Rover and gets better mpg.”

In today’s blog we’ve elected to give attention to the 2008 Porsche Cayenne, with a special emphasis coming from our unique perspective here in the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado. Whether it’s apparent or not, the fact is that we do a fair bit of research in connection with each of our blog postings. Generally the topics center around our products because, well, we’re a car dealership. And we’re in this business (among other reasons) because we love cars … in particular Porsches and Audis available here at Prestige Imports.
Doing research may not seem like tons of fun, but for us it’s not a chore because, as mentioned, we have a real affection for cars. Collecting bits and pieces of information from not only the manufacturer but from Porsche enthusiasts the world over, allows us to refine our own perspective and remain better in touch with customers and the marketplace.
The 2008 Porsche Cayenne is an upscale SUV that definitely gets its share of attention here in Denver. Summarizing from a review by the folks at Edmunds.com, the following characterizes some of their impressions:
For 2008, the Porsche Cayenne enters its second generation. Most of the changes are under the skin, and indeed the body shell and interior are mostly untouched. Wider headlights, a reshaped hood and front fenders and a deeper chin spoiler give the 2008 Cayenne a slightly more aggressive stance than last year’s model. More energetic power plants mean even the V6-equipped Cayenne can wear its Porsche crest with pride.
- The V6’s output now stands at 290 horsepower (an increase of 43 hp)
- The V8-powered Cayenne S makes 385 hp (an increase of 45 hp)
- The new GTS model has an enhanced version of that V8 that pumps out 405 hp
- The top-shelf Cayenne Turbo continues to be available, and it kicks out an astounding 500 hp (an increase of 50 hp)
Zero-to-60-mph times range from around 8 seconds flat for the V6 to around 5 seconds flat for the Turbo. Handling, always a forte of the Cayenne, is even better now thanks to optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC). This system uses automatically adjusting stabilizer bars to do an amazing job of virtually eliminating body roll when the SUV is driven hard on a winding road.
And if you choose to drive a Cayenne down a winding road, Colorado has plenty of them. We encourage you to stop by Prestige Imports in Lakewood to take one for a spin.
Occasionally we like to surf around on the internet and see what the media and others are saying about our products. It’s no secret that all of us at Prestige Imports in Denver are huge fans of Porsches, though it’s admittedly nice to see others extolling their virtues too. It’ll come as no surprise that one needn’t look very long or hard to locate rave reviews about Porsche automobiles.
A recent review of the 2008 Porsche Boxster from US News and World Reports in particular caught our eye. According to their report the 2008 Porsche Boxster ranks number 1 out of 9 Luxury Sports Cars. Their ranking was based on an analysis of 45 published reviews and test drives of the Porsche Boxster, and their analysis of reliability and safety data.
Here’s an excerpt of what they wrote:
“The Boxster’s high ranking is based on its road-hugging handling dynamics and practical, yet luxurious interior that’s suited to satisfy the pickiest of buyers. True to Porsche’s reputation for masterful engineering, the Boxster is near perfect — and serves as a fantastic choice for anyone desiring a Luxury Sports Car. The 2008 Porsche Boxster, the Cayman’s convertible twin brother, is every bit as practical as it is luxurious and sporty.
Overall, what the Boxster offers over so many others is a near idealistic balance, writes Automobile.com. Were not talking about its balance on the road, we all know about that, but more so, its balance of thrilling performance and almost decadent luxury. Combined with two trunks and a ride that’s compliant enough for daily driving, it’s no surprise that the Boxster receives the amount of praise that it does. While the 2008 Boxster features a 245-horsepower V6 engine, the Boxster S is equipped with a 295-horsepower V6.”
The review continues on to rate the 2008 Porsche Boxster favorably on the following:
- Performance - The rear-wheel drive Boxster is a dynamic performer
- Exterior - Critics appreciate the Boxster’s unique exterior design and quick-folding automatic convertible soft top.
- Interior - The 2008 Boxster ranks high in its class for its comfortable seats, superb fit and finish, and unheard of dual trunk compartments.
- Safety - Comes equipped with a wide array of active and passive safety features — including front and side-body air bags.
- Reliability - The 2008 Porsche Boxster reliability score of 10.0 out of 10 is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates.
Enough talk. Here’s the car.
